Question on Notice – Rail contracts

Question on Notice

No. 629

Asked on Friday, 14 September 2012

MR KATTER asked the Minister for Transport and Main Roads (MR EMERSON)—

QUESTION:
What commitments are being made to ensure the consistency and adequacy of contract works along the Mount Isa to Townsville rail line contractors given that many rely on this critical work and may not be sustainable if these works are intermittent?

ANSWER:
I thank the member for Mount Isa for the question.

Queensland Rail invests in the safety and reliability of the Mount Isa to Townsville Rail Line on an ongoing basis.

As a government Owned Corporation, Queensland Rail manages to maximise its resources, ensuring funds from the public purse are spent responsibly and efficiently. In meeting its task, Queensland Rail uses both internal and external expertise, workforce and equipment.

Because much of the maintenance and repair works required on the Mount Isa to Townsville rail line is intermittent by nature, (such as scheduled maintenance timed to minimise impacts to users, and unscheduled maintenance often occurring after major weather events). Queensland Rail uses both internal resources and contractors.

Where there is a need to engage external contractors, Queensland Rail endeavours to source these from the local community.
