KAP Member for Mount Isa Rob Katter has welcomed the long-awaited support from the State Government for the Mount Isa Water Board solar pumping project.
The project which had already been through the pre-feasibility study stage is an initiative pursued by numerous levels of government over a number of years.
“This is a project that has been a long time to come, and it is the only practical way in the short term to address water costs we have in Mount Isa,” Member for Mount Isa Rob Katter said.
“This was also the KAP’s previous response to the severe water shortages experienced in Mount Isa in 2014 when the cost of pumping became so restrictive some community members even made calls for a new dam,” he said.
“As pumping from Lake Julius is one of the biggest costs passed on to residents, it is only right the State Government explores ways to use renewable energy.
Mr Katter has also approached the Minister on a number of occasions to support further solar projects for individual land owners.
“We have been pushing the State government support small business investment into solar projects, including cattle stations,” Mr Katter said.
