LAST GASP FOR GULF FISHERS: KATTER MOVES TO DISALLOW GILLNET BAN

Member for Traeger and Leader of the Katter’s Australian Party (KAP), today has taken drastic action in the Queensland Parliament, moving to disallow the Government’s sly attempt to ban gillnet fishing in the Gulf of Carpentaria by stealth.

The disallowance motion would force the Government and Brisbane’s LNP to put on public record if they supported the fishing industry or if they wanted to be led by the ear from the environmental extremists at UNESCO.

“Unlike the Brisbane major parties, the KAP is a fierce advocate for our fishing industry. We will not stand by letting UNESCO run Queensland, decimating vital industries on a whim,” Mr Katter said.

“The Department and the Minister themselves admit that there is no scientific evidence backing the bans in the Gulf – in fact, the only data they collect is from the law-abiding, hard-working fishers that are looking down the barrel of financial decimation.

“This evening, the Queensland people will find out who is serious about saving towns such as Karumba in the Gulf of Carpentaria – the KAP will be fiercely fighting against any move to ban the commercial fishing industry.”
